The park itself
Cassiobury Park is one of the larger green spaces in the county — around 190 acres of meadows, woodland and the River Gade running through the middle. It is the kind of park that works for an early morning run, a long afternoon with children, or simply sitting somewhere quiet after a busy week.
From Cassio Road it is about a five-minute walk to the park entrance. There is no significant hill, no complicated route — just a straight walk along the road and you arrive.
A morning itinerary
Start with coffee. The Harlequin café inside the park opens early on weekends and has outdoor seating that stays comfortable through most of the year. It is worth the short walk in rather than grabbing something on the high street.
From there, follow the river path north. The woodland section past the miniature railway is quieter than the main open area and gives you the feeling of being properly out of town, despite still being a few minutes from the centre.
If you have children with you, the splash pad and play area in the central section are both well maintained and busy on warm weekends — arrive before 11am if you want to avoid the main crowds.
Afternoon options
Watford town centre is a 15-minute walk or a short bus ride from the park. The Intu Watford shopping centre has the usual high street chains, and there are a number of independent restaurants along the pedestrianised section of the high street worth exploring.
For something quieter, the Watford Museum on Lower High Street is free and covers the local area from the 17th century onward. It is a small, well-curated collection and worth an hour if you are interested in where you are staying.
Getting back
One of the advantages of Cassio Road as a base is that Cassiobury Park is not a destination you need to plan transport around — you walk there and walk back. For an evening meal, the restaurants on the high street are close enough that a taxi is optional rather than necessary.
If you are visiting during warmer months, the park has outdoor events from April through September including a summer festival and regular open-air cinema screenings. Dates are published on the Watford Borough Council website each spring.
